VERY PRELIMINARY Talent Sorting and Skill Complementarity Among Software Engineers
Conventional wisdom in Silicon Valley suggests that firms need to have some top talent on hand in order to recruit additional top talent. This may be because skilled engineers and other professionals want to work with other top performers and/or because firms can gain from complementarities in production among these employees. We analyze this notion empirically using longitudinal matched employ...
متن کاملSkill, Luck, and the Multiproduct Firm: Evidence from Hedge Funds
We propose that higher skilled firms diversify in equilibrium even though managers exploit idiosyncratic performance shocks to time diversification moves. We formalize this intuition in a mistakefree equilibrium and test our predictions using a large panel dataset on the hedge fund industry 19772006. The results show that returns fall following new fund launches, but are 13 basis points per mon...

متن کاملSkill management in software engineering
Allocation of people is a crucial point in the success of software projects. Several techniques have been proposed to manage them in an optimal way, yet, when it comes to do the actual allocation, several constraints occur. The constraints regard the limited human resources and skills available in a firm and the possibly large number of projects that must be handled at the same time. The paper ...

Executives have high stakes riding on executive skill accumulated in their non-CEO executive positions in order to establish themselves as talented before being on the competitive CEO market. This paper considers an assignment model augmented by costly pre-CEO executive skill accumulation on the job. As the firm size distribution is more spread to the right, causing the increase in firm size, t...
